Director, Development 
 
Asia-Pacific Field Division 
Conservation International (CI) is seeking a Development Director who will provide fundraising for CI’s Asia Pacific Division, focusing on the China, and Indo-Burma Programs, and supporting regional business development working with CI Singapore.  The Development Director will work closely with country directors and the Asia-Pacific Division management team to identify and cultivate partners and donors, and generally solicit support for the whole of the Asia-Pacific region, with particular emphasis on the above mentioned Programs.  The Development Director will also serve as a key representative for the Asia-Pacific Division in Conservation International’s headquarters, located in Arlington, Virginia.

The Development Director will bring a proven track record of successful fundraising at the six-figure level, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and the ability to set priorities and achieve aggressive results as an agent of change.  Applicants with experience in the Asia-Pacific region, with Mandarin language skills, will be given special consideration.  A background in biodiversity and/or conservation ecology science would be a plus.  Requires 7+ years of related experience.

The Development Director will report to the Senior Director, Asia-Pacific Division.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • FUNDRAISING:  Prepare and/or edit fundraising strategies, documents and presentations to secure gifts in the five-, six-, and seven-figure level from corporate, foundation, individual, government and multilateral donors. Meet with donors and prospective donors to cultivate interest in the Asia-Pacific regional programs. Track unfunded needs and manage the fundraising pipeline for the Asia-Pacific Division. Review fundraising opportunities and concepts for alignment with the Asia-Pacific regional strategy. 50%
  • INTERNAL REPRESENTATION & MANAGEMENT: Represent the Asia-Pacific Division internally in meetings and forums. Facilitate internal communications between headquarters and the regional programs. Coordinate directly with Asia-Pacific leadership in managing regional resources at headquarters.  30%
  • EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS: Represent the Asia-Pacific Division and the region generally in forums and build the partnerships needed to advance regional conservation priorities. This includes participating in interactions with industry leaders, governments and multilateral organizations, NGOs and the private sector.  20%
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Development Director will supervise the Regional Development Officer based in CI-Singapore office; and oversight of the Co-ordinator (Business Development) based in HQ.

Working Conditions: Position requires travel to Asia quarterly, as well as 3-4 trips annually within the United States to meet with donors or potential donors.  Regular phone calls outside normal business hours with key staff in Asia-Pacific and Australia required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 7 years of experience.

Required Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree required, with coursework or experience in environmental sciences and/or international development.
  • Proven fundraiser with an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and management skills
  • Ability to identify strategic issues and priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace the mission and strategies of Conservation International
  • Solid understanding of regional cultures and conservation context.

Preferred Skills:

  • Masters degree in environmental sciences or similar areas of study
  • Mandarin Chinese or other Asian language abilities
  • Experience living overseas or working in an international setting.
