The World Ocean Conference brings together government and multilateral officials to articulate a global vision for and make public commitments to improving management of marine resources, including impacts from climate change and how marine environments can help weather the crisis.
Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia: 11- 15 May, 2009

The focus of the World Ocean Conference (WOC) is the formal adoption of the Manado Ocean Declaration: a commitment between nations to address the impacts of climate change on the way of life and livelihoods in and on the sea, the coast and small islands. Following adoption of the Declaration, the WOC will discuss a Plan of Action and work to establish a World Ocean Forum as the umbrella organization to implement the Plan of Action.

The Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) centers around high-level political commitments by governments of the Coral Triangle area, representing a major contribution toward safeguarding the region’s marine and coastal biological resources. During the Coral Triangle Summit 2009, Heads of State from six countries of the Coral Triangle Initiative (Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Indonesia) will adopt a Plan of Action and announce specific national programs for on-the-ground activities.

CI is providing expertise and support to both the WOC and the CTI Summit through participation in a number of events including a demonstration of the Kalabia Marine Education Program and a “Voices of the Coral Triangle” workshop, among others, where experiences and challenges in addressing the impacts of climate change will be addressed.
