Director, Global Marine Fund

The Global Marine Partnership Fund is seeking a Technical Director.  The Global Marine Partnership Fund is a new program in Conservation International's Conservation Funding Division, with a global capitalization target of $100 Million to establish 10 new Seascapes. The Technical Director of the Fund will be responsible for developing the technical aspects of the Marine Fund at a global level and in assisting partners with regional implementation. This position will be charged with overseeing technical aspects of Seascape strategy and investment plan development, coordinating internally and externally wth key programs and institutions, developing tools and proceedures for implentating activities at the global as well as Seascape levels, and in analyzing and reporting on Seascape and global impacts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is tasked with leading the strategy development and Sustainable financing efforts in CI's Hawaiian Seascape.  In addition to providing technical support to the Hawaii Seascape, the position will provide technical assistance to additional Seascapes as they develop and to GMPF at a global level.  This position will be an active member of the Conservation Funding Division and CI's overarching marine initiative.  Responsibilities will include supporting fundraising activities, compiling and analizing data for reporting purposes, and providing support in generating a highly technical, highly applicable partner network to assist in implementation of the Fund.  Specific responsibilitis will include:

  • Lead sustainable finance efforts in Hawaii and broader Pacific including development of relationship with potential key partners such as Army Corp of Engineers, Department of Defense, and other government entities in region
  • Assist with donor engagment, in both the development of fundraising materials and in reporting results of the Fund at Seascape and global levels. In short term, support fundraising efforts of the technical components of the fund and oversee development, editting, and communication of technical aspects including monitoring, strategy development at the global and Seascape levels
  • Coordinate relationships and partnerships both internal and external to support development of the Global Marine Partnership Fund and implementation as the fund develops
  • Help to establish the GMPF as a mechanism for delivering appropriate, well thought out tools, technologies, and engage as an active member of the marine team providing input support and technical expertise. 
  • Provide support to senior director as needed/requested.
  • Engage as an active member of the Conservation Funding Division team providinng input, support, and technical expertise as needed, directed, or requested

Working Conditions:  This job will initially require moderate amounts of travel (25%), both domesticly and internationally. As the Fund expands its activities, travel is expected to increase (50%). Diving, visits to field sites sometimes in remote locations will be necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Master's degree / 10 years experience

Required Skills:

  • This job requires extensive experience in marine conservation including field experience, stakeholder engagement, technical expertise and working knowledge on issues such as climate change, sustainable finance, marine economics, law and policy, and strategic development
  • A successful applicant will have the ability to convene working teams and will have extensive experience in working with private and public sector stakeholders including government agencies, developing and reviewing large scale conservation strategy
  • Extensive knowledge of conservation issues in Hawaii and the broader Pacific necessary to support short-term department obligations  
  • SCUBA diving certification

Preferred Skills:

  • Second language, history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with foundations and/or grant making 
  • Proven track record in fundraising highly desirable
  • PhD or complementary degree or experience in a second discipline
