Reports to: VP, Africa and Madagascar Division

Conservation International is looking for a Technical Director to be based in our offices in Cape Town, South Africa. The Technical Director will lead the CI Southern Africa Center for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC), a partnership for conservation that will work across the continent.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Southern Africa CBC Technical Director will be responsible for developing and leading a policy and partnership network that extends our investment in biodiversity conservation and establishes links with climate change across the African continent. This will happen through the development of linkages between existing conservation and climate change/ecosystem services projects in the CI Africa and Madagascar portfolio, and extending these linkages to a new set of research, development, conservation and policy partners in Africa and outside. An initial focus will be to establish a forum for collaboration with Southern African institutions and CI projects, and to provide a policy support network to these forum members in the rapidly evolving climate change context.

This position will be a full-time post with considerable oppportunities for career development and influence within CI.  Salary according to experience. 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Level Required: Master's Degree

Year of Experience Required: 10

Working Conditions: Based at CI offices in Cape Town. Travel for approximately 30% of the time, to other African countries as well as more widely. 

Required Skills:

  • 10-15 years experience in African conservation
  • Detailed recent experience in climate change policy and field project implementation
  • Excellent knowledge of Southern African institutions involved in conservation and climate change

  • Engagement with national governments in southern African region and continent-wide
  • Team management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Financial planning
  • Proposal preparation
  • French
  • Portuguese
