Hawai‘i is home to a variety of endemic animals and plants. But the humpback whale only visits seasonally.. Each year, the whales migrate 3,000-miles from Alaska to Hawai‘i. They congregate in the warm, shallow waters of Lahaina to breed and raise their young. In Hawaiian culture, the humpback whale, or Koholā, is one of several body forms of the Kanaloa, a god represented in numerous Pacific Island cultures. Koholā use their songs to connect across vast oceans.
