Statement: Conservation International Recognizes Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Presidential Win

October 30, 2022

Arlington, VA (October 30, 2022) – Conservation International released the below statement following the conclusion of Brazil's presidential election:

"Conservation International congratulates Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election as president of Brazil.

"President-elect Lula has made it clear during his campaign that his administration will work to end illegal activities that threaten the health — and even the very existence — of the country’s vast and priceless natural wealth.

"Also, in August, Lula vowed to create a ministry for native peoples and to rebuild the country’s environmental agencies, which have a fundamental role in developing public policies in this mega-diverse country. We agree with these promises, and his words give us hope that under his administration, Brazil will turn the tide against the deforestation of the Amazon, perhaps the most important ecosystem in the world.

"We look forward to working with the new administration, and all people throughout Brazil, to support the country in developing its economy through the protection of nature."
