ARLINGTON, Va. (July 10, 2023) – Effective today, Conservation International announced Melanie Janin as its new Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO).

Janin brings a career in marketing communications across the conservation and environmental sectors, including a strong background in corporate sustainability and partnership initiatives. As CCMO, Janin will oversee Conservation International’s Brand & Communications team and will drive the strategy, messaging, and execution of the brand to engage global stakeholders and key audiences.

"Brand is the physical manifestation of who we are and what we stand for. For us, brand and communications are among an organization's most critical functions, and it is essential in solving the nature crisis," said Conservation International CEO Dr. M. Sanjayan. "Melanie has dedicated her career to this task. She has an impeccable track record with non-profits and the private sector in using brand leadership and communications to foster culture, leadership, and a forward-looking, problem-solving mindset. We are thrilled to have her on board."

“Investments in nature are investments in humanity – and the most impactful way to highlight this interdependence is to share inspiring stories of innovation that can help safeguard the future of our planet,” said Janin. “For decades, Conservation International has been a leader in creating programs that connect researchers, policymakers, business leaders, and communities  to build a world where people and nature thrive together. I’m honored and excited to be joining this organization to continue to develop and amplify these powerful stories of change.”

Most recently, Janin was an Executive Vice President at the global communications agency Weber Shandwick, leading the Sustainability & Social Impact practice for the West Coast of the United States and providing strategic counsel for companies, NGOs, and foundations. Before that, she led global sustainability communications for Amazon, developing strategy, content, messaging, and events to amplify the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Janin also led marketing and communications for BSR (Business for Social Responsibility), managing a global team and overseeing the BSR Annual Conference.

Janin’s earlier work includes leading marketing communications for the Corporate Partnerships Program at Environmental Defense Fund, leading communications at SeaWeb around various ocean conservation topics and priorities and serving as Director of Communications at Greenpeace. She sits on the board of Ocean Outcomes, a global nonprofit focused on sustainable fisheries.

Janin will split her time between Conservation International’s two office locations in the continental U.S., in Seattle and Arlington.
