Our plan to double ocean protection

The ocean feeds us, regulates our climate and is critical to the world’s economy. But by the end of the century, more of the world’s oceans could be hot, acidic and lifeless — with catastrophic implications for marine life, our climate and food security for billions. Together with global leaders and local communities, we are working to double the total area of ocean protection — maintaining its ability to feed communities, support economies and stabilize the climate.

How we'll do it

Work with global partners like the Blue Nature Alliance and Coral Reefs of the High Seas Coalition to help double the total area of ocean protected.

Strengthen ocean protection worldwide by collaborating with governments, experts, Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Promote sustainable and equitable fisheries to ensure food security for millions and protect the rights of fish workers, including many women in the industry.

Help coastal communities adapt to climate change by restoring ecosystems and supporting sustainable livelihoods, building resilience to stronger and more frequent storms.

Surf Conservation Program

The Surf Conservation Program harnesses the passion of the surfing community to protect coastal and marine ecosystems. Globally, mangroves and forests surrounding popular surf spots store 88 million tons of carbon — roughly equivalent to the emissions from 77 million gas-powered cars.

To date, Conservation International has worked with partners to create 23 Surf Protected Areas in Indonesia and we’re working to strengthen protected areas in Costa Rica, Peru and Brazil. Thanks to this unique partnership, more than 70 surf breaks and their surrounding ecosystems now have legal protection from unsustainable tourism development, coral and sand mining, deforestation, overfishing and other threats that could harm their biodiversity and ability to store carbon.

More than 75 percent of the world’s top surf breaks are located in areas with highly biodiverse ecosystems that urgently need protection. By the end of 2025, Conservation International will establish at least 50 Surf Protected Areas worldwide.
