Charting a Sustainable Future: Konservasi Indonesia's Strategic Partnership for Bintan Island's Marine Protected Areas

In March 2024, Konservasi Indonesia (KI), Conservation International’s implementing partner in Indonesia, established a landmark five-year strategic partnership to strengthen collaboration in managing Bintan Island’s Marine Protected Area. The partnership between Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH), PT Nikoi Island, and PT Cempedak Island aims to develop a co-management model focused on sustainable fisheries, marine management, and biodiversity conservation, ultimately benefiting both local communities and marine ecosystems.

The MPA plays is critical in preserving the region’s rich marine biodiversity amidst growing human activity. It safeguards important ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves, supporting sustainable fisheries, eco-tourism, and scientific research. Through dedicated conservation efforts, the MPA ensures the long-term health of marine ecosystems, contributing to the well-being of local populations and the environment.

To promote excellence in marine and fisheries studies, the partners introduced the Nikoi – Cempedak Konservasi Indonesia (NCKI) Awards, which recognizes outstanding students and lecturers in this field at UMRAH. These awards serve as an incentive for academic achievement and engagement in marine conservation efforts.

We thank Jord International for the ongoing funding support that has made this work possible.
