Rangelands

Rangelands offer a powerful natural climate solution — storing vast quantities of carbon in rangeland soils while also supporting the livelihoods of communities. To protect them, we must work with each other and with nature.

We work to restore high biodiversity grasslands, savannas and shrublands, underpinned by improved governance, science and traditional knowledge. We partner with local communities through the signing of conservation agreements where they implement nature-based solutions in exchange for receiving benefits, with a strong focus on including women and youth.
Conservation actions and incentives are identified with participating farmers based on what they can do to increase their resilience and adaptation and what is needed to support this. Doing this helps to enhance sustainable, resilient and vibrant livelihoods that can adapt to the impacts of climate change.

OUR APPROACH

Healthy African Rangelands

By 2030, we will support the replication, scaling and uptake of the Herding for Health model across 10 million hectares of biodiverse savannas, grasslands and shrublands in Africa

Jobs for Nature

By 2030 support the creation of 30,000 nature-positive work opportunities through the protection, restoration and management of at least 2 million hectares of high biodiversity rangelands, coastlines and oceans across South Africa

Climate positive planning & finance

By 2030 develop and embed climate positive policy frameworks, spatial planning tools and financing mechanisms in South Africa’s National & District Development Models

Reimagining Conservation

By 2030 pilot a new community-led approach to climate planning and biodiversity protection across all key rangeland landscapes and seascapes in South Africa
